The Dakar is open to amateur and professional drivers who race across sand dunes, mud, grass and rocks up to distances of over 500km each day.
As many as 50 people have lost their lives during The Dakar Rally which on average, is about 1 death for every year since the competition began.

THE DANGER FILES
Six people were killed during the 1988 race, three participants and three local residents.
In 2009, the body of 49-year-old motorcyclist Pascal Terry was found. He had been missing for three days and his body lay on a remote part of the second stage.
